ALEKS Math Placement Assessment

What Does My Math Placement Assessment (MPA) Score Mean?

Your math placement depends on your program requirements in addition to your score on the Math Placement Assessment. Please check with your academic advisor to make sure you meet all degree requirements.

If you don't score high enough on the initial assessment to place into the course that you want, you will have the opportunity to work in an ALEKS Prep and Learning Module before retaking the assessment. You may take the Placement Assessment up to 4 additional times after your initial assessment.

If you need to take MATH MATH 1234, a score of 76 or higher on the Math Placement Assessment is required. If your final score on the assessment is less than 76, take Pre-Calculus (MATH 1034) before taking MATH 1234. Do NOT take MATH 1212.

For MATH 1212, a score of 61 or higher on the Math Placement Assessment is required. If your final score on the assessment is less than 61, take College Alegbra (MATH 1012) before you take MATH 1212. You do not need to take Pre-Calculus.

If your program requires MATH 1212 and you score significantly above 76, you might consider taking MATH 1234 instead of MATH MATH 1212, especially if you like math.

If you have AP Calculus (AB or BC) credit, please consult an advisor after completing your Placement Assessment.

Consult with your academic advisor or email math@uvm.edu if you aren't sure which course you should take.
